History
Pottsboro was originally two large ranches, one was owned by Judge James G. Thompson and the other was owned by Mr. James Arthur Potts. In 1876, the town was established by pioneer James Potts when he donated a substantial amount of land. He did so because the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad was planning on using the town for one of its stops. As a stop for the railroad, Pottsboro grew rapidly for the rest of the 19th century and incorporated in 1880 when it had a population of about 200. Orignally, the town was named Pottsborough. However, in 1891 when the town applied for a Post Office, the federal government made the town drop the “ugh” and it resulted in “Pottsboro”.
The town was devastated by a number of fires occurring in 1890, 1902, 1923, and 1924. These fires were responsible for destroying a large portion of the business buildings in town. Yet, despite their setbacks, Pottsboro’s population had doubled by 1924 and hit 500 by 1925! The Great Depression hit the town very hard as the population decreased to 358 in 1936 and even to 312 in 1945. As the nearby town Denison began to rapidly expand in the 1950s, Pottsboro began to once again see an increase in business and population. By 1990, the town had finally hit over 1000 residents.

The town offers a variety of fun things to do with your family and friends! Whether that be enjoying a picnic and kayaking on a summer day at Island View Park or relaxing on your day off by getting a spa treatment at Tranquility Spa and Salon. Pottsboro is only an hour north of downtown Dallas so you will never fail to find something fun and exciting to do!
