With population of 22,773 according to the 200 census, Denison is a city in Grayson County, Texas 75 miles north of Dallas, and a total area of 23.4 square miles. The city limits extend north to the Red River forming the Oklahoma state line. Denison weather and climate are a part of the humid subtropical climate area. With an average housing unity density of 456.3 per square mile, there were 10,309 housing units reported.


Of the 22,773 people reported in the 2000 census, there were 9,185 households and 6,135 families living within Denison, with a population density of 1,008.1 people per square mile. Of these households, 29.8% had children under 18 living at home, 48.1% were married couples, 14.4% had a female householder, and 33.2% were non-families. There was an average household size of 2.43, with an average family size was 2.97.

 

HISTORY

Founded in 1872 and named after the wealthy MKT vice president George Denison, the town became an thriving commercial center due to it’s proximity to the Red River crossing of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas (MKT) Railroad. This became an important conduit of transportation in the area and helped to grow the area economy as a result.


By 1873 the first free public school in Texas was founded in Denison, and in the 20 years that followed Denison established itself as a retail and shipping center for North Texas. Surrounding the Main Street were gambling halls, bars, and a tent city. Between 1870 and 1900 five additional rail lines were connected from Denison to other North Texas communities.
