A city with a population of 38,521 as of 2010, Sherman is the county seat of Grayson County Texas and is part of the Texoma Region of Southern Oklahoma and North Texas. Located between Denison to the north and Howe to the south, the city has a total are of 41.5 square miles. Sherman weather and climate are a part of the humid subtropical climate area.

Of the 38,521 people residing in Sherman as of the 2010 census, there were a reported 14,864 households, and 8,820 families with a population density of 910 people per square mile. Of the 14,864 households reported, 30.9% had children under 18, 46.7% were married couples, 13.4% had a female householder, and 35.8% were not families.

Age distribution of the city was varied with 25.9% under 18 years of age, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 24 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% aged 65 or older. The median age of the city was 34 years.

History

The area was named after the General Sidney Sherman, a hero of the Texas Revolution. In 1850, by Texas Law Sherman was incorporated as a town, and by 1852 had a population of 300 and consisted of a a district clerk’s office, a church, and a public square.

By the 1870s the population had ballooned to over 6,000, as Sherman remained a commercial active area even during the Reconstruction period.

Infamously during the Sherman Riot of 1930, local citizens burned down the Grayson County Courthouse in an attempt to lynch George Hughes, and African American male accused of assaulting a white woman. The Black Business section of Sherman was also burned down during this 10 day period as Governor Dan Moody sent in National Guard troops and martial law was declared.
