HISTORY

Denison Real Estate Guide

Founded in 1872 and named after the wealthy MKT vice president George Denison, the town became an thriving commercial center due to it’s proximity to the Red River crossing of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas (MKT) Railroad. This became an important conduit of transportation in the area and helped to grow the area economy as a result.

By 1873 the first free public school in Texas was founded in Denison, and in the 20 years that followed Denison established itself as a retail and shipping center for North Texas. Surrounding the Main Street were gambling halls, bars, and a tent city. Between 1870 and 1900 five additional rail lines were connected from Denison to other North Texas communities.
